About Core Mountain Guides

Professional Guiding. Personalized Instruction. Better Mountain Skills.

Core Mountain Guides provides private guiding, climbing instruction, ski guiding, and avalanche education for people who want to become more capable and confident in the mountains. The programs are built around more than simply reaching an objective. We want you to understand the skills, systems, terrain, and decisions that make a successful mountain day possible.

Whether you are climbing outside for the first time, developing traditional climbing skills, preparing for a technical alpine objective, learning to travel in avalanche terrain, or becoming a stronger backcountry skier, the goal is the same:

Help you leave the mountains with more experience, better judgment, and skills you can use on your own.

A Small Guiding Company by Design

Core Mountain Guides is intentionally small. We focus on private guiding and small-group instruction rather than high-volume trips. That allows us to tailor each day to your experience, goals, and the conditions. Some clients want to climb a classic route. Others want to learn anchors, improve their movement on rock, become independent trad climbers, develop backcountry skiing skills, or prepare for bigger mountain objectives.

There is no one-size-fits-all mountain day. We choose terrain, objectives, and instruction based on what will create the best experience and the most useful progression for you.

Guiding That Helps You Become More Independent

A good guide can show you where to go. A great guide can also help you understand why. Whenever appropriate, we explain the decisions happening throughout the day: route selection, terrain choices, technical systems, risk management, efficiency, weather, conditions, and human factors.

You do not need to turn every guided day into a formal course. But the mountains are full of opportunities to learn. Our goal is to help you recognize those opportunities and gradually build the skills and judgment to take on more yourself.

The Core Approach

Personalized

Your goals matter.

We adapt each program to your experience, ability, objectives, and the conditions rather than forcing every client into the same itinerary.

Educational

We emphasize understanding, not memorization.

Whenever possible, we explain the reasoning behind systems and decisions so you can apply what you learn in new situations.

Paul Rachele IFMGA Mountain Guide

Judgment Driven

Technical skills are only part of mountain travel.

Good decisions require understanding terrain, weather, conditions, personal ability, group dynamics, and uncertainty.

Developing that judgment is central to how we guide and teach.

Experience You Can Trust

Core Mountain Guides is led by Paul Rachele, an IFMGA Mountain Guide, AIARE Avalanche Educator, and member of the AMGA Instructor Team.

That professional background informs how Core approaches instruction, risk management, and mountain travel, while keeping the experience focused on the client rather than the guide.

Progression Focused

The best mountain days create opportunities for future ones.

We help climbers and skiers build skills progressively so that each experience becomes a foundation for the next.

Who We Work With

You do not need to be an expert to hire a mountain guide. We work with climbers and skiers across a wide range of experience levels. Core Mountain Guides may be a good fit if you want to:

  • Make the transition from indoor to outdoor climbing

  • Learn traditional climbing

  • Improve anchor-building or multi-pitch systems

  • Become a more independent climber

  • Develop alpine climbing skills

  • Climb classic routes efficiently in unfamiliar terrain

  • Get started with backcountry skiing

  • Improve ski touring or ski mountaineering skills

  • Take an AIARE 1, Avalanche Rescue, or AIARE 2 course

  • Prepare for a larger climbing, skiing, or mountaineering objective

  • Spend a great day in the mountains with an experienced professional

You also do not need to know exactly which program is right for you. Tell us what you have done, what you are interested in, and what you would like to be able to do next.

Why Core Mountain Guides?

We believe professional guiding should do more than provide access to the mountains.

It should help people become better climbers, better skiers, and better decision-makers.

That means combining high professional standards with a personal approach to instruction and guiding.

It means choosing objectives that make sense for the day rather than chasing an itinerary at all costs.

And it means giving clients the knowledge and experience to continue progressing long after the guided day is over.

Professional certification. Personal instruction. Real mountain experience.

That is what Core Mountain Guides is built around.
