What Makes Climbing in the Gunks Unique?

The Shawangunks (“the Gunks”) are unlike most climbing areas in the U.S. Instead of vertical crack systems, the rock is defined by horizontal breaks that create:

  • Juggy, secure holds

  • Unique gear placements

  • Technical movement that rewards balance and efficiency

  • Steep, exposed climbing with incredible views

Many classic routes are 2–3 pitches long, making the Gunks one of the best places in the country to learn multi-pitch climbing.
